Sous Chef

Position Type: Full-time (30hrs a week)

We’re on the lookout for a talented Sous Chef to join our small, passionate team at The Star Inn, Waldron — a much-loved village pub serving seasonal, locally sourced British food.

About the role:
As Sous Chef, you’ll work for our Head Chef to deliver consistently excellent dishes, help shape seasonal menus, and ensure smooth day-to-day kitchen operations. You’ll be hands-on, leading by example, and supporting a small team in a fast-paced but friendly environment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Food Preparation & Cooking

    • Prepare and cook menu items to a consistently high standard

    • Assist with daily prep across all kitchen sections

    • Maintain presentation, taste, and portion standards

  • Team Support & Supervision

    • Lead the kitchen team in the Head Chef’s absence

    • Train and mentor junior chefs and kitchen porters

    • Support a positive, respectful, and productive kitchen culture

  • Service Management

    • Coordinate kitchen operations during busy service periods

    • Ensure timing and communication between kitchen and front of house

  • Food Safety & Hygiene

    • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation

    • Ensure all food safety, hygiene, and health & safety procedures are followed

    • Keep accurate records of fridge temperatures, cleaning, etc.

  • Stock & Ordering

    • Assist with stock control, ordering, and deliveries

    • Monitor and minimise waste

    • Help manage kitchen costs and ensure efficient use of ingredients

  • Menu Development

    • Contribute ideas for daily specials and seasonal menu changes

    • Help test and refine new dishes

What we’re looking for:

  • Proven experience as a Sous Chef or strong Chef de Partie ready for the next step

  • A passion for fresh, local, seasonal ingredients

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure

  • A team player with great communication skills

  • Ability to contribute ideas for specials and menus
